First full week of grad school is done

I'm enjoying graduate school. I really like that I get my own desk and an office/room with the other gta's in the department. There are five of us in all, and it's a nice little haven to escape to between classes. The office is on the third floor, which has low, sloping ceilings and a mysterious door in one of the hallways that is narrow and about three feet tall. I don't think I'll open the door and peek in, though, because I think it says something about asbestos on it. Best keep it closed, eh? Anyhow, the third floor has character and kind of reminds me of the movie Being John Malkovich, although not as creepy.

Yesterday I co-lead my first class discussion as a TA. I was afraid I might get deer-in-the-headlights syndrome upon standing in front of 450+ students, but it went fairly well considering it was my first time and all. I don't really remember what I said, but apparently it was at least somewhat coherent. Luckily for me, journalism students like to talk and have no qualms about speaking up in class. The professor had to step in after about 20 minutes and say that we'll take one more comment and then it would be time to move on to his lecture. After class, he told me and the other gta for the class that we did a great job with the discussion. I thought I only did so-so, but the only thing he said I need to do for next time is to move around some...I planted myself in one spot and didn't move much at all because I was nervous and not that comfortable, etc. It will get easier, though. Especially now that I know what to expect and have more of a feel for it.

I don't have any uber-exciting plans for the weekend, but I'm sure I'll have fun tomorrow night because Amanda and I are going to hang out. Tonight I'm just laying low, both to save money and also because nobody is available to do anything (that I know of). I'll probably just go over to my parents' house and do some laundry while I watch a movie on their big flatscreen. Good times.
