Big Plans

Fridays are usually pretty mellow for me. I don't have any classes, so I stay home and do homework (or at least intend to). So, usually my Fridays are pretty uneventful, at least during the day.

Today I had a visitor to my apartment, though. His name is Chris, and he's my new case manager for Big Brothers Big Sisters. He came over to do my at-home interview and make sure I don't live in a crack house or something like that. I decided to sign up to be a big sister a couple of weeks ago, but it's something I have been thinking about doing for a long time. It might take a couple of months before I'm matched up with a little sister, but I'm looking forward to it. I think it's a great program.

I wasn't even going to blog about becoming a big sister just yet, but one funny thing came up during my interview today. One of the last questions he asked was, "This is kind of different from the other questions and might put you on the spot, but what do you think Big Brothers Big Sisters of KC could do to market themselves better or attract more volunteers?"

I have looked at their website fairly extensively and I remember thinking how fun it would be to have a blog on there that a big/little update regulary and post photos and stories about what they do together, just to give people an idea of what the day-to-day experience is like. I told him that I had actually thought about doing a blog, just for fun, when I get a little sister - she and I could have our own blog.

This was just something I thought would be fun to do for myself and my little sister, though...I hadn't thought about it as being a part of their website, but I mentioned to him that it might work well for the website to have someone do that. When I said that, he seemed pretty excited and said that they had been trying to find someone who would do just that, but most of their volunteers don't feel comfortable keeping a blog or writing, etc. I told him that I'd be glad to do it, since I was wanting to do that, anyways, as long as my little sister is up for it. So, how cool is that?! I'm excited - this will be fun!!
