A thank you letter

By now it should be no secret that I am a fan of the Daily Show and the Colbert Report. After watching last Thursday's Colbert Report, I decided to post a thank-you to Stephen Colbert here on my blog (this is what happens when I'm bored and have a digital camera)...

Dearest Mr. Colbert,

As a graduate student in journalism, I have consistently tuned into your show to learn about the importance of truthiness, gravitas and unflagging polarized viewpoints in reporting the news. And now I have yet another compelling reason to watch your show: On your March 16, 2006 episode of the Colbert Report, you righteously called out columnist Commander Coconut for making fun of your ears, and then you demonstrated how you could tuck in your ear. Thank you for bringing awareness to a very serious subject near and dear to my heart. I, too, am an ear-tucker, but until I saw your show last week I was too plagued by shame and self-loathing about my ear-tucking ways to proudly display my special ability. As a toddler, I would tuck in my ear whenever the urge hit me. But, as I grew older and began to comprehend the disapproving stares and finger pointing of condemning onlookers, I halted my public eartucking and reserved it only for private moments when nobody else was watching (unless I was at a party and had a few drinks, but that’s besides the point). That shame from my earlier years has always lingered with me…until now.

Thanks to your courageous candor, I no longer resist the temptation to tuck in my ear or hide it behind my long hair. Your coming forth with this hidden ability offers renewed hope and inspiration to those of us who have tuckable ears, naysayers be damned. You showed me and all your other viewers that eartucking is not something to hide. On the contrary, you demonstrated that it is, in fact, something to display with pride. I have included my before and after photos, proudly displaying my tucked-in ear. Thank you, dearest earmate, for being brave enough to speak out for all of us.
